30 Books That Should Be On Your Radar: April 2022

As always, buy all of these books from your local indie bookseller, Bookshop.org, or Libro.fm. Stay safe, get vaccinated, and keep reading!—Daniel Ford

Chelsea Bieker hits the cover lottery again! We can’t wait to devour her new short stories like a candy necklace.

A new Taylor Brown novel is always cause for celebration.

Mike Nelson has been putting some terrific sportswriting on our #bookradar this year. Craig Calcaterra’s exploration of modern fandom is no exception.

We love any memoir that focuses on finding one’s artistic voice.

Jennifer Egan crafts the kind of fiction we desire to write. Eager to pick up this follow up to A Visit from the Goon Squad.

We could not have loved Annie Hartnett’s debut novel Rabbit Cake more and her latest Unlikely Animals dazzled us all over again.

Destined for Friday Morning Coffee host Caitlin Malcuit’s bookshelf. Fight like hell, indeed.

Emily St. John Mandel ensorcelled us all over again.

Seriously, how talented can one artist be? Of course Janelle Monáe would be good at short story writing.

We loved Sara Nović’s Girl at War, so were already excited about reading new words from the author. A glowing review from Celeste Ng sealed the deal.

Daniel Olivas’ stories are going to stick with us for quite awhile. Empathetic, touching, intelligent, fierce, and poetic.

We’ve been building out Baby Girl Ford’s library and this will be a welcome addition.

It says something that James Rollins hasn’t been on the show since 2020 and is still our most frequent guest by a wide margin. A new book is a good excuse for him to extend his lead!

We wouldn’t mind a team up with Sascha Rothchild’s Ruby and Caroline Kepnes ‘ Joe Goldberg. The body count would be unfathomable (and fun!).

We think Molly Shannon would be the perfect Pop Literacy guest, don’t you?

A novel on numerous #TBR lists with an irresistible premise.

Thank god Douglas Stuart didn’t make us wait long for his follow up to his beautiful novel Shuggie Bain. Grateful we have more of his words in the world.

“History repeats what we don’t remember.” Why, yes, this might be a story we’d be interested in.

We’ve said it hundreds of times, but it’s worth repeating: Read more poetry.

We still can’t believe Don Winslow is retiring. At least we have one more trilogy to soak up before he puts down his pen.

Author’s Corner

Peng Shepherd, author of The Cartographers and The Book of M, shared some terrific book recommendations on the show recently. Put them on your book radar ASAP and collect them all at your local indie bookstore.
