31 Books That Should Be On Your Radar: January 2022

So many our favorite authors pubbed in January 2022! As always, buy all of these books from your local indie bookseller, Bookshop.org, or Libro.fm. Stay safe, get vaccinated, and keep reading!—Daniel Ford

We’ll read anything Isabel Allende writes.

A splendid exploration of a writer’s life. Numerous gems you’ll underline and put on notes around your writing space.

Your heart will be in your throat once you start this novel. You’ll look around and think, maybe we’re not too far from this version of reality...

We somehow missed that Mike Chen was pubbing a book in January, but we are so thrilled to add him to our #TBR pile. He’s always a breath of fresh air in our reading life.

Amy Ferris rendered As Told To host Daniel Paisner speechless a few times during their recent chat (episode drops 2/1), which is more than enough to get her memoir on #bookradar. We love smart and funny and heartfelt prose.

One can get quickly and easily lost in a Lisa Gardner novel and we assume we’ll be searching for the light switch late at night while consuming her latest novel.

Robyn Gigl is a must welcome voice in our fiction community. Her Erin McCabe series has lasting staying power. One of our favorite characters from the past couple of years.

Pretty cool opening line: ‘There they are, America’s future. Alone at first, then all together.’ Noah Hawley hooks us all over again.

No punches were pulled this in this account of the rough-and-tumble Knicks of the 1990s. Hard to believe how close they got without winning the brass ring. Chris Herring’s lively prose and in-depth reporting softens the blow of those gut punches.

We’ve been on a female friendship (and alternating narrators) kick so we’re eager to check out Jean Chen Ho’s debut.

That cover and title paired with ‘a likable librarian sleuth’ is an offer too good to resist.

Leah Konen offered some great writer advice on #Authoring once upon a time. We’re looking forward to discovering all the ways a girls’ weekend can go horribly wrong.

We’re running out of superlatives for Laura Lippman. Of course she’s brilliant at writing short stories. Of course she is. Always nice catching up with Baltimore PI Tess Monaghan as well.

We can’t believe we missed this book when it first pubbed in 2021. Thank goodness we discovered Syed M. Masood and his effervescent writing in time for the novel’s paperback pub day.

Come for the food, stay for the drama. Meet four women you’ll never forget.

Seriously, how are we going to find time to read all these terrific books? It’s only January. We’re going to have to invite Mesha Maren back on the show to talk about the characters we meet in this book.

Another Writer’s Bone favorite! Can we claim this as the cover of the year already? We love a good coming-of-age thriller.

A no-holds-barred look at the life of one of baseball’s larger-than-life characters. Sensational sportswriting.

Imani Perry is destined for a Friday Morning Coffee episode. Not bad when Isabel Wilkerson calls your book ‘an inspiration.’

Always fun spending some time in Peter Ash’s world! One of our favorite ongoing series.

James Rollins’ new book is a good excuse to invite him back on the show and let him his extend his appearances lead. We think he’s up to six or seven? We have plenty of questions left for him!

We met Joanna Schaffhausen during a Noir at the Bar in 2020 and we’ve been fans of her work ever since!

Any writer who writes a book about podcasters falling in love has a permanent spot on this list. We can’t wait to see what romance awaits in the TV news biz!

Talk about opening lines: ‘Her face is a constellation of scars.’ By all accounts, this is a book we’re going to rip through in a few sittings.

Always a pleasure dipping into 1970s Boston with Gabriel Valjan’s Shane Cleary.

We were excited for Yara Zgheib’s new book already, but a blurb from our literary friend Hala Alyan sealed the deal!
